Warrior Poets | An Opportunity for Word Out poets
About Warrior Poets
Warrior Poets represents a partnership between Workers of Art and the Marlowe Theatre.
A Lead Poet (Joelle Taylor) together with two Emerging Poets will facilitate 3 day-long workshops with a group of children in care, recruited through Virtual Schools Kent.
The poems that emerge from the young people in care will be the catalyst for a day of creative collaboration between a musician, a visual artist, a filmmaker, a projection artist and the poets who together will create an immersive installation that will be sited in the Marlowe Studio during the theatre’s Gala Weekend in October.
The theatre will be used as a black box through which audiences can wander at will. Recordings of the poet’s voices and the music created for this piece will become the soundtrack and narrative for this piece whilst projected words and illustration covering the walls, floor and ceiling will create the landscape.
The two Emerging Poets will also lead the wider Word Out group to gather crowd-sourced input from the community. These words will appear within the final installation; inspire guerilla style marketing and through pop up performances will move the activity beyond the installation itself, into the Marlowe Foyer and across the city.
As Artistic Director, Lemn Sissay will elevate the production - bringing his wealth of experience around creating poetry inspired installations and working with young people in care.
The Shadow Poet Opportunity
This opportunity is open to emerging poets within the Word Out. Word Out is a group of young Kent based poets brought together and supported by Wise Words.
Two emerging poets will have an opportunity to work with and be mentored by Joelle Taylor to deliver workshops for the young people in care. They will lead on guerilla style marketing to engage the wider community and build relationships with the young people in care that we hope will last beyond the length of this project.
This will be a freelance role. The fee for this work will be £400 to include:
- Taking part in one day of planning
- Facilitating 3 day-long workshops mentored by Joelle Taylor (Lead Poet)
