Naked State: incarcerated women and the transformational power of poetry | 5:30pm - 6:30pm

Intertwining her own spoken word poetry with that of incarcerated women, Leah will give a picture of the restorative and rehabilitative power of trauma-informed poetry practice, along with the universality of women’s narratives.

Leah is a spoken word poet, who works in collaboration with film-makers, dancers and musicians. At the heart of her poetry is the autobiographical exploration of identity and of issues of liberation. She is published through performance, film and anthologies and magazines in England and the United States.

As an artist/activist, Leah also leads poetry-as-empowerment workshops, primarily in prisons. In 2012 she undertook a Winston Churchill Travel Fellowship, visiting women’s correctional facilities across the United States with dance and theatre companies and in 2013 she received a Royal Society for Public Health Special Commendation Award for her contribution to Creative Arts and the Criminal Justice System
